Sepang MotoGP Test 5-7 Feb 2013

”This level of access is just amazing...”

Our now-traditional “warm up” to the MotoGP season at the year’s first official MotoGP Test at Sepang was an awesome experience!

We spent two days at the Sepang track as guests of the team Go ‘n Fun Honda Gresini.

In this time we were able to wander all over the paddock, see the bikes and garages from pit lane, get a tour of the Gresini pit and even had an opportunity to go to the trackside itself, to see the bikes from the service road and visit the Marco Simoncelli plaque erected at the 2012 MotoGP (see our photos from that event)

It’s all new and exciting this year, but it will come as little surprise that the majority of our attention was on the return of Valentino Rossi to Yamaha and our burning curiosity over how this would turn out.

Pretty well, as is happens!

Tuesday evening we gathered in our hotel - the formerly named Pan Pacific where pretty much ALL the teams and riders stay. That evening in the bar we enjoyed the company (and more than a few beers!) of the pit crew of Vale - notably Jeremy Burgess and company - and even got to say “ciao” to the Doctor himself!

Of course we were welcome by the crew at the track - and thus we simply stood near the entrance to his garage to catch him coming in and out! Scott & James even got their photos signed!

We met pretty much every rider - including the new (and ONLY) Aussie on the grid & riding for Gresini, Bryan Staring.  Given it was his first time out on all this, we are pretty impressed by him!  Our special guest at Phillip Island MotoGP, Troy Bayliss, responded to the question from the audience about who he thought was “the Aussie to watch”.  His answer: Bryan!

Security was VERY tight inside the pits - lots of secrets at this point of the season!  So we were especially privileged to get a tour of the the garage of our partner team Honda Gresini.

Helping us to make sense of everything that was happening was our guest Neil Spalding who joined us for lunch with some fascinating insights into the future of Ducati, where is CRT going, will Marquez be a contender and much more...

Can’t wait for the Jerez test!!

You can’t get any closer to the bikes and riders than at the official Tests.  We will go to the next test, Jerez 23-25 Mar 2013, and the tests following the MotoGP events, provisionally following Jerez, Catalunya, San Marino and Valencia. (Note: most tests sold out last year)
