Grand prix of spain 3-6 May 2013

“I don’t want to say anything about it here.”

--- Jorge Lorenzo at the post race press conference when asked about whether he thought Marc Marquez’s last corner pass was fair.

The first two rounds this year were great fun, but slightly surreal - the “real” circus doesn’t start until we hit Europe!

Sadly attendance overall at the event is well down on the heyday of Jerez - traditionally the largest attendance of the year. Our own small numbers were in line with this -- but it meant that the people who came really had a ball!

Friday night our opening dinner took place at our charming rural hotel over paella and unlimited beer and wine. (One of the great things about our “Hacienda package” are the open beer taps waiting for us when we get back from a hot day at the track! :-)

We were delighted to welcome several special guests for the evening, starting with Derek Crutchlow - Cal’s dad - who was giving us some very interesting background on Cal and his own very lengthy experience in motorcycle racing! The manager of our sponsored riders Danny Webb and Brad Binder - Steve Burgess - also joined in adding his considerable insight as a real “insider”. South African Brad himself, and his younger brother just starting in the Red Bull Rookies, Daryn Binder also joined us. Keep an eye on these two! Daryn took a brilliant 5th in the second race in Texas; and Brad will go on to take a stunning 4th at Jerez!

Speaking of rookies, we are proud sponsors of the American Red Bull Rookie Joe Roberts; who after his qualifying practice also joined us for dinner.

A perfect day at the track Saturday saw Brad qualify 4th in the Moto3 - once again the top Honda.  Our Brit in the MotoGP Cal Crutchlow also took an impressive 4th, ahead of Rossi.  IN the evening several of us stayed on at the track to have a lovely dinner with Team Honda Gresini and all their riders. We met just about everyone!

Sunday racing gave us a great battle at the front of the Moto3, with Maverick Vinales just edging Luis Salom. As we said, Brad took 4th and another of our sponsored riders Jakub Kornfeil took an impressive 5th. Our 3rd rider Danny Webb, in a bit of pain, took a creditable 13th. Moto2 was great for Scott Redding taking another podium.

However the day and the weekend was about MotoGP - and here we certainly got the drama we were craving! Dani Pedrosa put in a commanding performance to win the race, but it was Marc Marquez’s astonishingly aggressive move on the world champion Jorge Lorenzo in the final corner that had us all agog. Right on the borderline - and certainly taking Jorge by surprise! I have to say this is what racing should be like! Well done to Marc, and Jorge earned a lot of respect for owning up to the fact that he had made a tiny error that the rookie Marc was able to take advantage of. Jorge was ticked off to start with (who wouldn’t be?!) but his subsequent reactions re-asserted why we think he is a total professional.

Sunday we closed off with some sampling of the local product Jerez is rightfully famous for!  Can’t believe we have to wait a year to come back!!

For us, Brad Binder was the man of the weekend - overcoming numerous deficiencies to take 4th, and the fastest Honda - by far!  (CRM)
